Our Stories: Madhavi, Scholar (2011)

Madhavi is a  young woman from Bhutan who spent the first 16 years of her life in a Nepalese refugee camp and fled to the United States after her family’s hut was destroyed in a fire. Despite being afflicted with a painful medical condition, she has maintained a 3.6 GPA and serves as vice-president of a local program for immigrant youth. Grateful for the “new life” that the International Rescue Committee gave her family, she plans to volunteer with the IRC after studying accounting at Salisbury College.
