Our Stories: Baierna, Scholar (2020)

Baierna (Barna) is a Uyghur refugee who has been in the United States for the last four years. She traces her interest in emergency medicine to having witnessed a massacre by the authorities of members of her ethnic minority in China. She began volunteering as an EMT when she arrived in the US and plans to become an emergency physician. Barna embraced her culture when she arrived in the United States. She has learned traditional Uyghur dancing and is a volunteer teaching assistant at a school for Uyghur children. She plans to transfer to a four-year university after completing her Associate’s degree at Northern Virginia Community College.
